Safety at the beach - have we gone overboard? 7 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 0
Last week a 10 year old boy got a fractured skull as a result of a run away surfboard (from an adult beginner).

There is now some debate about enforcing wearing helmets in the surf. Have we gone mad with wrapping our kids up in cotton wool? Sure we wear helmets ski-ing but are we going too far to enforce helmets in what is arguably the best, natural sport on the planet?

I do agree with you. Sometimes things do get taken over board. I think they can suggest helmets are a great safety option and then leave it at the discretion of the parents to decide what is appropriate for their child.
That said, my kids are too young to surf, so I guess I'll just have to wait until they are alittle older to determine how 'over protective' I might be.

My boy broke his jaw at a skateboard ramp and that was with a helmet.
The lesson there was to avoid razor scooters.
A & E doctors claim they are the greatest contributor to emergency visits (of kids and adults!)
